This presentation examines that what kind of food were described in kibyōshi, the literature in the late Edo period, in other words, what kind of food the people in Edo described in the literature and enjoyed them.
Kibyōshi (yellow cover books) is a genre of picture books, printed between 1775 and 1806. We can catch a glimpse of the life in the late Edo period through them. In some kibyōshi, we can find the,"personification" of foods and the disputes or battles between them. For example, Bakemono ōeyama (1776) is a story that udon (wheat-based noodles) disposes of soba (noodles made from buckwheat flour) Kudamaki taiheiki (1788) is a story about the battle between high-quality sake and cheap sake. In this presentation, in order to understand the food culture of Edo period through kibyōshi, I classify the foods personified in kibyōshi and discuss the aspects of the food in the literary works.
